Epson will exhibit its direct-to-shape printing system – an inkjet solution for printing directly onto 3D objects – at smart automation and robotics trade fair, Automatica, in Messe München, Germany.

Running from 24-27 June, Automatica will mark the first overseas exhibition of this solution, with Epson treating the event as a launchpad before it begins its full-scale global commercialisation.

The direct-to-shape printing system combines Epson's compact S800 PrecisionCore printheads with an Epson industrial robot. The S800 is the smallest printhead in the PrecisionCore series, which allows for printing on complex shapes such as grooves and curves.

A six-axis robot and lifting mechanisms that independently raise and lower the printheads are used in combination to allow for printing on objects from different angles.

The direct-to-shape printing system digitalises traditional analogue printing. The company said it streamlines the manufacturing processes by automating manual tasks and using space efficiently.

According to Epson, its inkjet technology deposits ink only where, and in the volume needed, which reduces the amount of material used and wasted, making it more environmentally sustainable. Inkjet systems also eliminate the need for plates or special materials for each operation, enabling cost-effective personalisation and customisation.

The direct-to-shape printing system is expected to be used in fields where there is a demand for printing on 3D shapes, such as helmets for athletics and industrial use, automotive parts (interior and exterior), home appliances, sporting equipment, apparel, accessories and more.

In addition to graphics applications, Epson envisions the direct-to-shape printing system being used in functional printing, such as the printing of sensors with conductive ink and the coating of 3D objects.

Epson has been conducting ongoing R&D at Inkjet Innovation Lab Fujimi.

Leveraging its accumulated expertise, Epson is actively pursuing global partnerships for commercial deployment.

The company offers not only the hardware, but also total solutions including ink, image processing, and after-sales support. Epson also supports ink selection and operational assistance in collaboration with optimal partners.

From July 2025, the direct-to-shape printing system exhibited at Automatica will be permanently installed at Epson Deutschland, providing a test and evaluation environment for customer substrates and accelerating real-world implementation.
