The PUR binder replaces an older Horizon EVA binder, with owner Shane Dummett commenting that, “this would enable Valiant to offer the strongest binding possible".

Shane and his business partner Brian Stevens have owned 40-year-old Valiant for 15 years, taking over the general commercial printer, and adding direct mail and security printing to the portfolio. The company runs both offset and digital printing, with some 17 staff on the books.

Valiant was experiencing a growth in demand for high quality booklets and to support that, Shane said: “we want to assure all our clients an end product that is of the highest durability and quality”.

Valiant Press is confident with the quality of the range of products from Horizon, including Stitchliner Mark III , and CRF-362 Creaser and Folder, that Currie Group has supplied, so it was a natural choice for it to choose the BQ-280 PUR. Its ease of use and the levels of semi-automation on the new system also impressed the company.

Maximum book size is 385 x 320mm the maximum book thickness is 51mm. A built-in thickness caliper provides greater production efficiency for instant changeover and variable thickness book production. It runs at 500 books an hour.

The BQ-280PUR has dual application drums and separate EVA/PSA side glue application. The drum application enables production of one-to-one variable thickness books with maximum quality control, which meets the needs of Valiant Press.

Vince Pignataro, Victorian account manager at Currie Group said: “I have known Shane and Brian for about the same time they took over the Valiant Press company some 15 years ago. The then Valiant Press was not what it is today in terms of size and equipment.

“Valiant Press reached out to Currie Group approximately 12 years ago requiring some up-to-date bindery equipment to complement their growing printing business. Throughout the journey together, Valiant Press has installed Horizon as its preferred bindery equipment for reliability and robustness.

“The equipment Currie Group has installed had started with booklet making to the current Horizon Mark III saddle stitcher, fully automatic Horizon AFC-566F fully automatic folding system, Horizon CRF-362 Creaser Folder, Foliant Laminating system, and after installing the BQ-270EVA some years ago Valiant Press wanted the best for its clients, and just installed the Horizon BQ-280PUR Binder. This has given Valiant Press the guarantee and assurance for the customers of a high-quality product.

“I look forward to continuing our great relationship with the Valiant Press team, supporting the business with the best solutions to improve its workflow, productivity and quality of products it produces.”
