EAST COAST UNLOCKS CAN PRINTING DURABILITY

East Coast Canning + Printing has launched BulletProof – a new generation of digitally printed aluminium cans that solves the durability problem long associated with digital print on metal substrates.

The finish allows brands to use matte and spot-gloss coatings without compromising print integrity or surface durability. According to East Coast founder Chris Kelly, the breakthrough came from solving UV ink adhesion problems at the substrate level.

“Digitally printed cans have always had problems with ink adhesion,” Kelly said. “Even minor scuffs could cause major visual issues. We’ve worked with our can supplier Visy and made critical process changes to resolve those challenges.”

The BulletProof system is powered by a Hinterkopf digital press using specialised German-made UV inks, but the real impact lies in the proprietary 'tech stack' East Coast built around the machine – involving R&D adjustments across the print line and supply chain.

“We now have a relatively tough skin and ink that sticks,” Kelly said. “The matte finish doesn’t rely on over-varnish for protection anymore.”

The cans have been tested for tunnel pasteurisation, cold storage, abrasion and transport. “The printed surface is no longer the weak point,” Kelly said. “Digital cans are now viable for rugged use.”

Already adopted by Yulli’s Brews for its Ranch Water RTD, BulletProof is drawing interest from across beverage sectors. “We’re seeing an uptick in demand from all types now that BulletProof is available,” Kelly said. “Coffee and low-ABV wine products are especially keen, particularly those requiring pasteurisation.”

For the craft brewing market – East Coast’s heartland – the breakthrough is significant. “Craft brewers can now confidently use digitally printed matte cans for core range or mid-strength offerings that go through esky storage and pasteurisation,” Kelly said. “It’s no longer just for special releases – this is viable for everyday SKUs.”

East Coast Canning + Printing, which started as Australia’s first mobile canning operation in 2016, now runs a 24/7 print facility on the NSW South Coast which services customers nationally. The company says its low-volume capabilities and premium finishes are ideal for craft brewers and other SME beverage producers looking to move beyond stickered cans or basic labels.
