APP Mills granted PEFC Certification

The sustainability efforts of Asia Pulp and Paper's (APP) four main paper mills in Indonesia have been officially recognised through the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Four of APP's subsidiary paper mills: Tjiwi Kimia, Pindo Deli, Indah Kiat Serang, and Indah Kiat Tangerang, have earned "Chain-of-Custody" certification according to the PEFC standard. This signifies that these mills can make credible claims on the content of PEFC certified fibres in their products coming from sustainably-managed forest.

APP supports certification as a mechanism to promote the responsible management of the world's working forests and has chosen to be a frontrunner in the Indonesian pulp and paper industry by focusing on PEFC 'Chain-of-Custody' certification.

"Achieving the first Indonesian PEFC 'Chain-of-Custody' certification is an accomplishment for APP and an important step in the sustainability focus of the future," said Aida Greenbury, APP director of Sustainability & Stakeholder Engagement.

PEFC is an internationally-recognised forest management certification standards endorsement program that balances economic, social, and environmental concerns related to the commercial use of forests. PEFC promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification and provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

APP has recently conducted the pulp and paper industry's first-ever integrated Carbon-Socio Footprint Assessment with Environmental Resources Management (ERM), the world's leading environmental consultancy as part of its longer-term goal to produce carbon neutral paper.
