First major public outing for the newly merged paper company brought together Sydney’s creative design community for a celebration of all things print and paper.

Tony Bertrand, national marketing manager, Ball & Doggett, once again rolled out the welcome carpet for members of Sydney’s design community at the Art House Hotel in Pitt Street last night. Reinforcing his enthusiasm for the importance of design and print in every day life, he again urged the audience to make the most of the Mohawk range of papers to differentiate their product and brand portfolios. He was backed up by the presence of Craig Brown, CEO of the paper company, who confirmed his support for the event.

Bertrand said the bi-annual show, one of the few that celebrates design and print, will continue but will likely change its name next time around under the new corporate branding. This year there were over 200 entries in the six categories. Tellingly there were no annual reports entered.

Jury Chairman, Jason Little, from For The People, said the judging process was extremely selective with each of the five judges picking a different piece for their judges’ choice. The winning pieces reflect their integrity and tenacity in choosing some of the very best in print design across Australia and New Zealand.

The winning work serves as a reminder that as we rapidly move into a screen-based world, there is still the need and desire to produce exception pieces of design and print that can engage our physical senses.

The Awards followed on a day of presentations and education where four industry experts entertained and instructed a good roll-up of Sydney design aficionados. Nathan Leong from The Distillery proved a hit with his introduction to letterpress printing, while Wayne Thompson from the Australian Type Foundry introduced designers to the secrets of print fonts. Ryan Curtis from the Frost Collective design studio and Kelvin Gage from Dominion Printing also brought their respective expertise to bear.

The Mohawk show moves to Melbourne next Thursday where the industry is invited in for the daytime sessions again, to be followed by the invite only awards presentation after dark.
