Employed as a prepress tradesperson. Undertaking all the tasks necessary in a small team environment to produce quality work to a required deadline. Tasks included graphic design, formatting of supplied files to customer specifications, impositions, film output and plate making.
Richmonds predominately uses In-Design on a Macintosh platform but knowledge of many PC design programs was required as many customers supply their own design and artwork. I was required to utilise the supplied files and convert them to PDFs or another format which could then be transferred to the working system. I was also required to liaise with the customers to ensure their requirements were met.

Pre-press Manager
This was mainly an honorary title as it was a one-man department. I was responsible for the full range of pre-press tasks, from cleaning and maintaining equipment to organizing job priority to maintain the production schedule. I also did impositions, camera work, film combining, platemaking and was responsible for stock inventory. I was also required to produce some work on the Macs and output film. If required I also helped out in other departments including the Hand Bindery and Despatch.

Various positions held including: hand bindery, dispatch, front office, artroom, graphics and electronic pre-press.
Main position since July '95: Quality control of imagesetter output. The position entailed checking film output from the imagesetter for errant mistakes and potential problems and assisting the pre-press manager to ensure that production schedules were met by maintaining job priorities. This required a sound knowledge of all aspects of the printing trade including planning, presses and bindery as well as all aspects of pre-press including typesetting, Macs and operators and graphic reproducers abilities. I achieved a good knowledge of the following Mac programs and their inherent problems and how to avoid or remedy many of them. QuarkXpress, Pagemaker, Photoshop, pre-print-pro, Press-wise and Trapwise.
I also received training on several flatbed scanners and am able to produce black and white and colour scans.
After the installation of an A1, and later an A0, 4-colour plotter, my duties expanded to also involve the checking of digital proofs before being sent to the client and/or film output.
