Canon cuts Telstra print costs by 40 per cent

The completion of the installation represents the end of an operation that began in late 2003, when Telstra made the decision to cut the money spent on print. The telecommunications provider chose to reduce the number of devices across the organization, and Canon was contracted to provide a range of multifunction devices to perform the printing, copying, faxing and scanning.

150 buildings were audited over the course of the installation, with a joint Telstra and Canon team delivering over a thousand multifunction devices, installing remote printing solutions to 35,000 desktops and training over 25,000 users on how to use the new system.

The results go well beyond the 40 per cent reduction in print costs. The telecommunication provider's new integrated printing platform means there are now 18 users for every machine installed, a huge reduction from the previous level of three users to every machine.

Telstra also reports a reduction in costs associated with service and maintenance, IT support, helpdesk operations and documentation, as well as general printing supplies like toner and paper.

The installation has also improved the telecommunication provider's environmental bottom line. Double-sided printing is now performed as standard, and its toner cartridge/bottle recycling through Close The Loop and Planet Ark has so far diverted 10.9 tonnes of waste that would have otherwise ended up as landfill.
