Charity work earns Bob McMillan Order of Australia medal

Print identity, Bob McMillan, takes out Order of Australia medal for charity work with Royal Prince Alfred hospital’s cancer centre.

McMillan (pictured) said that receiving the award at this year’s Queens Birthday Honours was a “terrific surprise” and “completely unexpected.” He also accredits the printing industry as the catalyst for this award.

“My involvement in charity work sprung out of the printing industry,” explained the former McMillan owner, who is now semi-retired after selling the business to Blue Star three years ago. “We supported a lot of charities, and for the last 10 years I worked closely at director level with the late Chris O’Brien at RPA.”

Here, McMillan became a director of the Sydney Cancer Centre where he helped to raise $200 million in funds. The centre is currently under construction and due to be completed by 2013.

“It’s a big project and there is a real need for it,” McMillan said. “Every body has worked very hard and it is a rewarding thing to be part of.”

Receiving the award, McMillan was also recognised for his contribution to the printing industry, particularly in the area of print management.

“I’d encourage others in the printing industry to get involved with charities,” McMillan urged. “It’s a very fulfilling thing to do.”
