What you see is what you will get with last week’s SWOP certification of CGS Publishing Technologies International’s digital soft proofing system. ORIS Soft Proof, was granted SWOP certification for the Apple Cinema and the Eizo ColorEdge CG2200 displays. A step in the direction of international sot proofing the review committee noted the color quality and gray balance of the ORIS system, which produces color-accurate PRD/X-3 files and distributes them, automatically, to any location in the world.
SWOP is one of the most commonly used colour standards in the industry.

First they take Berlin – berliner newspaper format that is. All over the world we’re witnessing the end of the broadsheet newspaper in favour of a shift to the tabloid-style berliner. Latest to downsize is the Independent on Sunday in the UK. Other UK qualities intending to switch include The Observer while The Daily Telegraph will publish its sports and business sections in the compact format.
Anyone taking bets on how long The Sydney
Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian will defy the trend?

The world’s largest sheetfed offset press is supposed to be a mammoth KBA Rapida 205 81-inch seven-colour plus coater that was sold at print 05 to a printing company in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We can only assume that at 60,000lbs (27.12 tonnes) the press is topping the scales in weight because at seven colours it won’t be the longest press.
Then again the press release has the strange claim of it being ‘ the world’s largest litho press in the U.S.’

Konica Minolta is finding out there’s no point in trying to re-invent the wheel. It has teamed with Kodak-owned Creo to introduce the IC-301 Image Controller for its colour production printing system, the bizhub PRO C500. A co-development between the two companies, the end result is a workflow with fast RIP speeds. This brings to four the number of image controllers for the bizhub PRO C500, an embedded controller (IP-921) and a choice of three external controllers.
There’s little doubt that Konica Minolta is getting serious about high-end digital printing.

And finally … here’s one from Terry Stone, perhaps the only one of a number that is fit to print.
A small printing business owner was struggling to make ends meet and couldn’t wait until John Howard’s new IR laws came into effect before cutting staff. Trouble is he only had two workers, Jack and Jill.
He called Jill into the office to explain his problem.
After spelling out the economics that made his decision so hard, he ended by saying, ” So you see, I’ve got to lay you or Jack off.”
She said,” Well, you better jack off, because I’ve got a headache.”
