Clancy . . . overflow . . . the best bits . . . funnies
Although never one to engage in gratuitous corporate bashing, to Clancy the incident appears to involve extreme and reckless disregard for safety by the global packaging giant. Darren Moon, 29, was crushed after being pulled head first into the paper rollers at the company’s Fairfield plant in March, 2003. Amcor pleaded guilty to failing to provide a safe workplace, training and supervision. The court of appeal increased the fine from the original $120,000, which the judge declared grossly inadequate.
According to a report, the company asked for 30 days to pay, but the judge replied, “I’m sure Amcor could raise the money in 14 days."

Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched department. Rumours abound that some of the largest printing company buyouts announced in recent times have had the wheels fall off before the money hit the bank.
Stay tuned for more.

There’s a new HP Indigo users group formed – Digital Solutions Cooperative (Dscoop). It gets launched at Print 05 in Chicago next week and is the company’s response to the fracas between it and the former users group ICE (Indigo Customer Exchange). The new group has all the resources of HP Indigo behind it, while Kodak has moved to pick up the sponsorship of ICE, which will gather in Las Vegas during November – a name change is on the cards.
Not that it makes much difference here. Current Images, the Currie Group digital printing division, could only find one member of ICE among its 50 plus HP Indigo customers, and that not a very active one. Perhaps the new group will attract more users.

The flexo industry – or as it is becoming known as, the flexi industry (why they change it? I can’ say, maybe they like it better that way) is energetic and developing rapidly. Because two major players, Amcor and Visy, dominate packaging in the region the technology never gets too much airplay. However Roland DG is partnering with the US-based Graphic Intelligence Agency to present a seminar designed to help flexi users expand their colour knowledge and RIP expertise.
Maximizing Flexi: Power User Seminar Tour will be presented across Australia and New Zealand. With a focus on digital printing, topics will include utilizing Design Central, maximizing workflow efficiency, and getting the best colour possible.
According to John Wall, marketing manager Roland DG, since the launch of this seminar in the USA in May and June, the seminars have proven invaluable to flexi owners who have taken the course.
If you want to sign up you have to phone (wot! no online registration?) 1-800-500-119 in Australia and 09-309-8104 in New Zealand. More info at Roland DG

And finally … to prove that the truth mostly hurts.
A woman rushed in to see her doctor, looking very much worried and strung out.
“Doctor, take a look at me,” she implored. “When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were bloodshot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face!
What's wrong with me, Doctor?”
The doctor looks her over for a couple of minutes, then begins: “Well, in the first place, there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight....”
