It shows that for the first time profit margins across the industry have fallen below four percent. But that’s not all the bad news. According to BPIF director of corporate and external affairs Cicely Brown, high levels of debt will ensure future profits go to paying off the financiers.
"The median level of capital employed fell during the same period. This suggests that although the net level of investment was lower, this investment is being funded increasingly through debt which is likely to depress surpluses further in coming years," she said.

The cost of data traffic in the graphic arts industry is becoming a serious item on the balance sheets. Because graphic files are among the largest, the need for fat pipes and low transmission rates is becoming pressing. Latest entrant into the market with a solution is MiroNet which has launched GAIN (Graphic Arts Integrated Network).

The network allows users to send unlimited amount of traffic to each other via a chosen speed connection, all for a fixed monthly fee, said MiroNet’s CEO Peter Lamont. “GAIN is perfect for companies with interstate offices. GAIN members can securely share data with any other company offering services within the virtual private network for free; which means, for example, that sending files to Global Media Movers’ WebSEND will not incur any excess data charges.”

And finally . . . thanks to Andy McCourt for reminding us of the genius that was Tommy Cooper. Yes, you’ve read some of them before in Clancy, but you can’t have too much Cooper.

  • "Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there
are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my
mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother
    Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it's Colin."

  • "So I was in my car, and I was driving along, and my boss rang
up, and he said 'You've been promoted.' And I swerved. And then he
rang up a second time and said "You've been promoted again.' And I
swerved again. He rang up a third time and said 'You're managing
director.' And I went into a tree. And a policeman came up and said 'What
happened to you?' And I said 'I careered off the road.”

  • "Cos it's strange, isn't it. You stand in the middle of a library
and go 'Aaaaaaagghhhh' and everyone just stares at you. But you do
the same thing on an aeroplane, and everyone joins in."

  • "He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your
trouser legs and put it in a library.' I thought 'That's a turn-up for
    the books."

  • "I bumped into an old acquaintance the other day, he told me
he had taken a job as a postman. He said it was better than
    walking the streets."
