The award for outstanding achievement in this year’s Packaging Council of Australia Design awards went to Coles for an innovative packaging cap that allows the direct application of sauce to baste food during the cooking process.

In an entry category for outstanding achievement that focuses on innovation, the judges were looking for entries that display innovative design and thinking; technology and/or material use; benefit to consumers; functional and/or convenient elements. The winning entry was commissioned by Coles and manufactured by Melbourne-based Caps & Closures.

In awarding the entry the judges said, This is a world first! Coles have developed a unique cap for a sauce bottle that has a basting applicator integrated into the product packaging, allowing the customer to directly baste food during the cooking process. The material of the brush is durable, heat resistant, food safe and allows the spread of sauce across the food item, single handily. The user can then easily remove the cap for cleaning, meeting the foot safety requirements. This is a true example of innovation and how packaging can provide direct benefits to consumers.

According to Mark Daws, Currie Group general manager labels & packaging, innovation in packaging is the key element to the Currie Group and HP’s focus in the packaging and label sector. “We like to reward people and companies that think outside the square when it comes to the design and manufacturer of packaging. I think the judges did a great job this year picking the Coles entry. It’s a world first and has also won awards internationally,” he said.

"This year I was really impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of the people who won the awards. Their commitment and energy was a highlight of the event."

This year’s Packaging Design Awards were presented at an evening at the Kooyong Tennis Club where around 130 industry professionals mingled and celebrated. The informal gathering is the second year the awards have been held as a stand-alone event, pronounced an outstanding success by Jennifer Salem, awards manager, PCA.

Currie Group is preparing for next year's launch of  the HP Indigo 20000, the digital press targeting the packaging sector. The HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press is capable of producing a wide range of industrial packaging including flexible packaging, labels, and shrink sleeves on film or paper.  The press can produce the majority of flexible packaging applications, including food packages, using surface or reverse printing. Digitally printed materials can be converted using standard laminating and finishing equipment to create just-in-time and cost-effective short-runs.
