Dalton Paper turns carbon neutral page

Dalton Paper boasts an envious reputation being able to offer Australia's first carbon neutral paper, Envi.

Envi was launched officially in Sydney this week and evolved from an 18-month long journey. John Ryder noted that in one year, Australian Paper had reduced its CO2 emissions by 36,000 tonnes and from there decided to offset its carbon foorptint.

With some help from the Department of Climate Change, Envi was then created.

"We took our lifestyle analysis to the Department of Climate Change for correction and approval and from there created Envi," Ryder said.

Ryder added that Australian Paper's Shoalhaven and Maryvale Mills will soon be following Tasmania's lead and going carbon neutral.

Guest speaker, Ken Hickson, director of ABC Carbon encouraged all businesses to follow suit.  "Businesses now have to adapt and promote sustainability in everything they do," he said.

Bertrant says that to date the response to Envi has been impressive and inspiring. "We've had so much interest from corporate Australia," he said, adding that customers including AGL, the Victorian Labor Party, Forestry Tasmania and Hungry Jacks have all used the product.

He predicts this usage will increase. "We will see a heightened awareness of carbon options in the future," Bertrant added.
