Digital print course succeeds with flying colours

The first of the several courses planned by DES was held in its head office in the Sydney suburb of Rhodes, with attendance comprised of a range professional photographers, framers, magazine editors and creatives.

Colour expert David Crowther (pictured right) heads up the two-day courses, addressing topics like how to establish a colour-managed environment and run an efficient inkjet workflow. The course is billed as ideal for gaining a clear understanding of how to reproduce an accurate digital inkjet print, and is suitable for both novices and those with a more technical background.

Feedback from the industry attendees was positive, with David Simmonds, from Simmonds Photography Melbourne, claiming the course provided him with an easy route into the difficult world of colour management.

“David Crowther has an immense breadth of knowledge and experience that photographers could really benefit from,” says Simmonds.

Marcus Bell, Studio Impressions, claims the course has improved his knowledge of how to maintain a colour accurate workflow.

“I can monitor my inkjet prints and have full control of everything in house,” says Bell. “This is a really valuable opportunity for professional photographers.”

Philippe Ruttens, from Editor Capture Magazine, says he took away valuable knowledge from the course on monitor and printer profiling, as well as soft proofing with a light box and Photoshop use.

“This course is a must for professional photographers who need to deliver any type of digital files to clients, especially publishers, design and ad agencies,” says Ruttens. “Any photographer who produces more than half a dozen prints a week really.”

The course comes with the promise of a certificate to the attendees who complete it, but DES claims the most important benefit the Digital Print Makers Master Class offers is the opportunity to have a look at the different solutions available, without having to invest in the equipment.

DES claims feedback for its first course was overwhelmingly positive, and plans to hold a number of other classes throughout 2006. Dates available now include:

  • 14th and 15th March
  • 9th and 10th May
  • 11th and 12th May
  • 15th and 16th June
  • 20th and 21st June.
