Digital print patent fight threatens entire industry
The patent fight now in the US courts involves ownership of the ability to place variable data and images in documents – the basis of digital printing. According to Inside Print Radio host, Rick Littrell, the claim by RR Donnelly is so broad it could stifle the industry. “I can’t believe it. They are going after the entire VDP industry [variable digital printing].
“It’s based on four patents awarded in 2001, but surely there must be some prior art in this. Digital printing began with Indigo and Xeikon in 1996,” he said during this week’s radio programme. “We should all keep our eyes on this.”
