Editorial positions lost to APN outsourcing

APN announced sub-editing and design jobs on The New Zealand Herald and other publications will go with the consequent loss of jobs. Production house, Pagemasters, is setting up a new centre in Auckland, where APN suggested redundant staff could find alternate employment.

According to reports, Pagemasters in Melbourne has already attracted a reputation for offering employees poor working conditions, with journalists being paid lower rates than those working in metropolitan areas.

Bruce Davidson, managing director of Pagemasters said that outsourcing was reflective of the global village. “As newspapers face financial pressures with advertising revenues being moved into other platforms, such as the internet, the agency can play a significant role in the health of regional newspapers, in particular,” he said.
