Fairfax lines up extra dry

Newspapers printed in the eastern states set to experiment with water-cooled UV curing technology as Fairfax gears up to install two Baldwin QuadCure UV dryers for 2012 operations.

The experiment into UV drying will mark the first time Fairfax has tried this technology purchased to enhance its uncoated and coated capabilities, according to Bob Lockley, chief executive of print & distribution at Fairfax Media Limited

“We hope to have both UV dryers up and running at NSW and ACT by Jan 2012. This is the first time we have tried this new technology, though we have tried IR (infrared) in the past.”

The $750K order is Baldwin Technology’s first for its water-cooled, high-end QuadCure UV dryer in the newspaper segment. Baldwin acquired this UV drying technology for sheetfed presses last year and adapted it for new segments of the global print market.

Peter Hultberg, VP of global sales and marketing at Baldwin says these UV dryers to be installed on existing press installations significantly improve print quality and enable use of a wider range of paper qualities.

Baldwin is also in the process of developing a new air-cooled UV drying system to compete in the single-wide newspaper market with expected market release in the fall at the Graph Expo and IFRA Expo exhibitions in the US and Europe.
