Fire rips through Melbourne bookbinder
The fire took hold of a section of the trade bindery provider shortly after 10am on Wednesday. About 60 workers from the factory were evacuated, as well as another 200 employees from adjoining businesses, while the nearby Burwood Highway and tram services were closed in both directions.
In addition to the more than 60 firefighters called in to battle the blaze, over 15 trucks were at the scene with breathing apparatus used to combat the thick smoke. An internal attack to cut off the fire prevented it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade says the fire is thought to have started in the factory's machinery, which was destroyed as well as the stock.
The Bindery is jointly owned by the Soto Group, McPhersons Printing Group and management equity. A major trade resource it was known for having introduced the first modern case binding book line to Australia.
