First DocuColor 6060 installation & first DocuProof 1250 order
Fuji Xerox Australia has completed the first installation of the new DocuColor 6060 digital colour press at Melbourne’s Typographical Services while also securing the first Australian order for the DocuProof 1250 at Melbourne book publishing giant Pearson Australia.

Prepress house turned commercial printing company Typographical Services recently installed the DocuColor 6060 on June 5. According to Typographical Services’ Director Michael Berry, the company’s acquisition of the DocuColor 6060 fits in with Typographical Services’ strategy of expanding into a commercial print model and “covering all bases” by offering both digital and offset printing.
“About 18 months ago, Typographical Services recognised the need to expand out into the printing arena and the ever-increasing demand for short-run print jobs. The DocuColor 6060 gives us a vehicle to meet these two challenges head-on,” said Berry.
The DocuColor 6060: Runs Like A Dream
Berry described the installation as “very smooth”, with the company’s new DocuColor 6060 fully up and running within two days of the installation process. Typographical Services is currently using the DocuColor 6060 to complete a wide range of jobs for the company’s advertising agency and graphic design clientele like brochures, flyers and double-sided books.
“The DocuColor 6060 really fits in perfectly with today’s short-run printing demand – delivering high speeds teamed with fantastic, high-quality colour,” continued Berry.
“The versatility of the DocuColor 6060 is incredible, allowing us to throughput a whole variety of paper stocks, which will enable us to tackle some new applications and new markets in the future. It also fits in perfectly with Typographical Services’ existing digital and offset printing equipment.”
And, most importantly, the staff at Typographical Services love it.
“The DocuColor 6060 is so easy to use and the staff love it. The files run through the imposition feature in Creo’s RIP and the calibration units are very straightforward. It’s really that simple.”
The DocuProof 1250: Making High-Quality Inhouse Colour Accurate Proofing A Reality For Pearson Australia
Pearson Australia ordered three new DocuProof 1250s. According to Pearson’s Senior Macintosh Analyst, Doug Langsford, the company was looking for a solution that would deliver a high standard of colour accuracy for the range of inhouse publication samples for publishers, authors and interstate sales representatives while also allowing Pearson to gain cost savings by reducing the outsourcing of their colour proofs.

“We began looking for a new solution in August last year and had a look at what Pearson in the USA were doing, which is where we discovered the DocuProof 1250,” said Langsford.
“The DocuProof 1250 is a perfect fit for the Australian book publishing industry, which is really heading towards inhouse proofing due to the amount of book publishers using CTP. It also fits in with the growing trend of book publishers doing their own short-run book publishing inhouse.”
Pearson’s three new DocuProof 1250s will be installed in July – two are due to go in Pearson’s Penguin office in Camberwell and one is set to go in Pearson Education office in South Melbourne. According to Langsford, the key features of the DocuProof 1250 that really drew Pearson towards the proofer and digital printer in one included the KPG Matchprint RIP plus the incredibly fast RIPping and printing times that can be achieved with the DocuProof 1250.
“Speed is always important to us in the book publishing industry as time is always of the essence and people always want everything yesterday, so it’s vital that we get everything proofed and out the door on time. The colour accuracy of the DocuProof 1250 is also spot on and we are anticipating huge cost savings by being able to start doing colour-accurate inhouse proofing,” Langsford continued.
“The DocuProof 1250 will ultimately give Penguin and Pearson Education the ability to produce books at a lower cost while also effectively maintaining and improving on quality,” added Pearson’s Information Services Director Peter Dart.
