First installation of Heidelberg’s PacPrint press

The SM52-8-P A3 machine, which has already undergone several months of field-testing in a printing company in the UK, has now graduated to a full production environment.

Shane Hanlon (pictured right), national product manager of Heidelberg in Australia and New Zealand, claims the test run of the SM52-8-P has confirmed the powerful benefits of the new machine. “Since the installation of the SM52-8-P the test customer has experienced higher quality, increased productivity and most of all higher profit margins,” says Hanlon.

Australians and New Zealanders will get their first chance to have a look at the SM52-8-P at PacPrint in May. “From the Speedmaster side we will see the longest, fastest and most feature packed A3 presses ever seen in Australia,” says Hanlon. “Along with the completely new entry-level technology, PacPrint will also be the world's first showing of the new PM 52 with up-graded automation features.”

The SM52-8-P is geared towards short run and four colour double–sided production jobs, designed to deliver quick turn-around times for customers.

Results from the field-test customer have been overwhelmingly positive with the customer saying he has achieved record turnover months as a result of better delivery times, an increase in quality and throughput and the ability to compete favourably against A2 printers in short-run work.

Other results achieved by the customer include printing perfecting jobs, with a full out image, on stock up to 400gsm with no marking. The SM52-8-P’s advanced stock delivery system enables the use of 300gsm and 400gsm stock without marking.

Better tints and solids are achieved using the Vario Alcolor Dampening and using Heidelberg Saphira Bio inks the stack can be handled in less than 20 minutes including silk and matt papers.

The introduction of the SM52-8-P has allowed the field test customer to offer better delivery times. Citing a specific job the company reported that “a regular, fixed price job that was previously produced in two passes on a four-colour press was reaping virtually zero profit. Now with the SM52-8-P we can achieve a 15 percent mark-up and are capable of producing twice the work!”
