Former Photo Engravers to unite for old times’ sake

Gavin Sheehan, prepress production manager,
Nicholson Print Solutions, is hopeful of organising a reunion of the many industry professionals that got their start or honed their skills through Photo Engravers.

"Photo Engravers was a large independent prepress shop that closed down in the early 1980's. Most of New Zealand's prepress journeymen would have had 'something' to do with P.E. or its subsidiaries, prior to this time. I have already had an extremely positive feed back so far," he said.

Photo Engravers had a long history and saw many of the industry's stalwarts pass through its doors. The company originated from W. Dawson Ltd, where it shared a building with famous New Zealand artist, C.F. Goldie. On becoming Photo Engravers it moved premises to Wyndham Street where it operated through the years of World War 2.

After the war, Photo Engravers moved to Pynton Terrace at the top of Myers Park where it remained until closing in the early 1980s. Having served the industry for a good 50 years, hundreds of staff have passed through the doors of Photo Engravers, many of whom are still involved in the industry. It is hoped that the event will pull a strong crowd of familiar and long-lost faces in a night to remember one of New Zealand’s historic companies.

The reunion will take place at the Takapuna Cricket Club, on Auckland's North Shore, on Saturday 18th August 2007.
