Front line management gets a training boost
The course has grown out of the work McGowan and his group, Print Training Australia, have been doing with some of the larger print and packaging companies. It is based on a Mt Eliza Business School programme that is customized for the printing and graphic arts industry.
According to McGowan, (pictured) the nationally recognized programme met with early success and in conjunction with Printing Industries strategies were developed to enable smaller companies and individuals to tap into the scheme. Already the first group has completed the programme.
“The first programme was undertaken ‘in-house’ for a group of participants in a single company. We are now delivering to ‘composite classes’ of participants, drawn from a range of print enterprises. As a part of the programme we undertake an evaluation of the management competencies of participants at the start and on conclusion of the programme. The findings from the first group demonstrated a significant benefit,” he said.
The program attracts a Commonwealth Government incentive funding to employers of $4400 per eligible participant. There is also a $200 discount for Printing Industries members.
The course is appropriate for a variety of educational levels and attainments. “It’s designed with an understanding that participants will come from a broad range of backgrounds with an equally broad range of experiences and existing knowledge,” said McGowan. ” Some participants may not have undertaken any formal study since leaving school, so resources and assessments are pitched at a level that is inclusive of a range of academic experiences. The requirements of assessment are also firmly grounded in application in the workplace, not in lengthy written ‘theoretical’ assignments.”
The Sydney-based course takes place over 11 days, spread out throughout the year.
Awarding of a Diploma qualification will require active participation in all 11-day sessions.
These sessions will commence at 8.45am and conclude at 4.00pm on the dates above.
Participants will also be required to undertake workplace activity, including a major workplace project, completion of 12 Workbooks and seven Action Plans as part of the learning and assessment process. Time commitment between sessions will vary depending on individual circumstances. We suggest that participants plan to undertake a minimum of four hours workplace activities between sessions. The participant’s manager will be required to ‘sign-off’ on the workplace project.
Cost of the course is $4,870.
