FSC launches brings printers, publishers and paper sectors together

"The bottom line is that the level of interest from these three groups in FSC has grown very rapidly," said Michael Spencer, chief executive of FSC Australia. "This is an opportunity to share experiences and try to provide answers on how the systems work; there's a lot of interest from people wanting to understand it more so it responds to that development."

Speakers at the first PPP event include: Spencer; Pina Gervassi; Alasdair McGregor; Loy Jones; Kristina Holdorf and Hamish Crawford.

The interest in FSC follows trends established in Europe, North America and Japan, according to Spencer. "The trend is still accelerating," he said. With popular authors like JK Rowling (of Harry Potter fame) insisting that their books are printed on stock that does not contribute to deforestation and BBC magazines moving their masthead to FSC certified stock, Spencer believes that Australia will have similar results and attributes the number of those coming to the first event to this.

"The level of interest we've had already is great," he said. "Registrations are running above our expectations already. We anticipated 50 people might resister and we've already reached that with a month to go."

This popularity means that the conference will also be recorded and podcasted throughout the nation. Following that, Spencer says that there are already plans to hold a similar event in Sydney. "My view is that we'd be looking to hold events on a three-six month basis and rotate them between cities," he said.
