Fuji Xerox digital magazine cover for Print21 proves a hit
The cover of the June issue of the iconic graphic arts magazine was printed on the new Fuji Xerox Color 1000 Press with the addition of ‘clear dry ink.’
The 8,000 plus print run of the cover – outside and inside – was produced at the Fuji Xerox Epicentre at Eveleigh over a five-day period. The production grunt of the machine was tested during the print run and came through without a hiccup.
A notable feature of the cover and the one to draw most comment is the inclusion of the Color 1000’s – clear dry ink. This is used as an in-line, one pass spot coating, avoiding the necessity to take it offline and usually outside for finishing.
According to Henryk Kraszewski, marketing manager for production colour systems, the addition of the clear dry ink will drive additional work to press owners. “As the design community starts to understand the unique design opportunities through spot coating, we anticipate that this will drive additional work to printers who use this technology,” he said.
Kraszewski, who along with Anthony Dixon, is responsible for the groundbreaking print job, also made the point that the covers were printed on a recycled paper stock, Mega, from KW Doggett’s, highlighting the press’s flexibility.
In light of the success of the cover production run, Fuji Xerox intends to produce an historic edition of the publication. In a first ever production, over 100 copies of the June issue of Print21 will be printed entirely digitally.
“This is a historic change in production printing. The press proved it could handle a commercial graphic arts job easily. It used to be that digital had to match up to offset, but now, as this cover shows, the quality is easily on a par and the short run capabilities of digital are setting the pace,” said Patrick Howard, publisher Print21.
“Copies of the first ever digitally printed Print21 graphic arts magazine in Australia and New Zealand are likely to become collectors pieces. They are a line in the sand charting the industry’s technological advancement."
