Growth challenges for DES in Melbourne
Increased activity in its core sectors has encouraged the supply side enterprise to expand its Victorian operations.
According to Russell Robertson, sales director of labels and packaging at DES, the relocation from Mulgrave to Notting Hill at the end of August, positions the new site as a local distribution hub.
“With the business expanding, the main driver behind the move was to have local warehousing and stock to service Melbourne. We will be managing our stock out of here to have a better level of support for our local customer base.
Robertson noted that no cranes were used in the big shift, but a large number of trucks were used to transition all equipment and stock to the new 600 square meter site, nine minutes away.
“We knocked some walls down, pulled out some offices and extensively revamped the facility to suit our requirements. We are pretty nicely set up now to move forward, with a full showroom facility in place.
“The warehouse space has vastly increased, it is probably at least four times larger than the Mulgrave site. This means we will be able to stock support locally rather than rely on overnight deliveries from Sydney.

The new site, as in the old, offers distribution access to both southeastern freeway and EastLink. The Notting Hill brand also positions DES closer to some of its key customers, only five minutes from GEON and down the road from Amcor.
“We will have ten people manning the new facility, and will be employing some new people in the future. At the moment we are in the process of getting signage for the site, which should happen soon as we are here and working,” he adds.
