HP takes on inkjet print cartridge rip-offs

Patent-infringing knockoffs barred from the US, following an International Trade Commission (ITC) ruling in favour of HP.

The Commission is directing a general exclusion order, regardless of source, on the US import and sale of HP-compatible inkjet print cartridges that infringe HP patents.

Companies recently found to be directly ripping off manufacturing patents include MicroJet Technology, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based DB-Tel Incorporated, and PTC Holdings Limited.

Upholding the Initial Determination made in June, the ITC has ruled that Asia Pacific Microsystems (APM) of Taiwan-based United Microelectronics Corporation is a contributory infringer, and was liable for inducing infringement by other companies in its supply.

According to Vyomesh Joshi, executive VP of HP’s Imaging and Printing Group, the company is committed to the protection of its intellectual property. "HP is pleased with the outcome on these matters and the ITC's enforcement of intellectual property rights."
