Ian Walz keeps printers lean and green

With more than 30 years experience in the printing industry, Ian Walz believes he has lots to contribute to its ongoing sustainability in his new role as Printing Industries’ national manager - learning and development.

Walz (pictured) previously worked as training manager for a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and has a background in sheetfed and webfed lithography, TAFE teaching and print sales and marketing.

He describes himself as a "training evangelist" and will be responsible for Printing Industries major training and certification programs including Sustainable Green Print (SGP) and the ‘Lean & Green’ Competitive manufacturing program.

“Having spent the last 20 years as both a facilitator of training in the printing industry and Training Manager for a Registered Training Organisation, I constantly see the positive results that flow from a company that embraces an ongoing training plan,” he said.

“My aim is to pass on the good news that training is an investment and it shouldn’t be viewed as being a cost to a company. A first-rate quality training program results in better outcomes, as employees tend to display a greater sense of ownership and pride in their work.  This can help lead to increased productivity and efficiency, and of course, an increase in job satisfaction.”

Walz also challenges the notion that training is a cost many companies shy away from. “I don’t believe that a company can afford not to up-skill their workers and remain competitive in these unpredictable economic times,” he said.

“In my new role it is my hope to be a reference point for companies that wish to take this positive step  and embrace the Sustainable Green Print (SGP) program that is currently offered in each State by Printing Industries and the ‘Lean & Green’ Competitive Manufacturing course. Lean has the extra benefit of attracting funds from the Federal Government to help participating companies.”
