Jorgen Lund - Heidelberg and EAC Graphics - passes away

The well-known industry identity lived and worked in Australia for many years as managing director of EAC Graphics. Colleague, Andy Vels Jensen, managing director of Heidelberg ANZ, writes a personal memoir.

Jorgen Lund, (pictured) a very good friend, EAC man and Heidelberger passed away in Denmark overnight. Jorgen was diagnosed with a brain tumor back in December 2008; in fact five days after he returned from his last visit to Melbourne Australia.

During this visit to Melbourne he was joined by our CEO for the region, Bent Mortensen. We somehow managed to indulge a bit too much in a common interest; Australian reds! His plan was always to visit Australia regularly in his retirement.

On that note, Bent and Jorgen have known each other since apprentice days in EAC. Jorgen joined The East Asiatic Company as an apprentice in August 1968; Bent immediately thereafter. Many years and good times have been had.

Jorgen turned 60 in 2008 and the plan was to retire in Denmark, while enjoying a busy travel schedule visiting kids, grandkids and good friends across the world; playing golf with anyone up to it!

Jorgen attended the last drupa in 2008 (pictured). This was the last time he managed to catch up with everyone in the world of Print. Confirms that there’s always something good to come out of a drupa; spending time with old friends, business contacts and close colleagues is one of them. Jorgen also managed to properly farewell Asia Pacific colleagues in June last year when we had a regional management meeting. An emotional time as he was already well into his battle.

What a guy! Never a dull moment with Jorgen around. Trying to outwit Jorgen was always a difficult task. His one liners were unique and classic. I’m sure he will continue to entertain at his next port of call.

I recently read the statement, dying is easy, living is the hard part. For Jorgen it was definitely the 100% opposite. He loved and lived life and fought the cancer with his usual no nonsense approach. He continued to communicate with everyone, directly or through his wife Birgitte, sharing with us his battle. It was a tough one and one he was determined to be the first to beat it. He once made the point that chemo hadn’t managed to “steal” any of his blonde hair…. he started the battle completely bald!

Jorgen passed away surrounded by loved ones.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at Jorgen and Birgitte’s local church in Denmark; Ordrup Kirke.

Friends overseas who wish to show their sympathy are kindly suggested to sponsor Jorgen’s daughter Caroline as she takes part in a race for Cancer Research in London in May (her employer HSBC will match any contributions). This can be done at http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/natjudycaroline
Kind Regards,
Andy Vels Jensen
