Letters, feedback, opinions – get it off your chest

Dear Editor,

The treasury officials who met with Printing Industries representatives regarding annual report printing must have felt that the lobbying experience was as vicious as being flogged with a warm lettuce, to quote a former prime minister.

It is bewildering that Printing Industries would regard it as a "breakthrough" that shareholders will still be able to request a company annual report at no additional cost.

One of the most significant arms of the printing industry - the printing of annual reports - is about to be amputated and the only plea that Printing Industries can muster is that it would be "preferable" to delay it for a year.

Dear Editor,

Re: Scott Telfer brings Southern Colour north to NSW

I think Scott Telfer is still living in the eighties.
There are a number of quality printers in New South Wales with Pettaras Press being one of them.
Another Melbourne printer taking Sydney work is not welcome here.
Maybe Scott can invest his money and take risks in buying plant and equipment like we all did to start a print company rather
than relying on others to do so. Maybe he can move down to Melbourne?

Best Regards,

Dear Editor,

Re: Right sizing the printing industry: Print 21magazine article

Great article Patrick!

Your Polestar stats were a surprise to me, I visited their site a number of times in my past life researching their training projects; I was impressed! The financial info from memory stopped at turnover, and I dug no further, your article was enlightening, but not surprising. As you note it is no easy task to make the "big tent" work as seen in Australia as well. Keep up the good work.

Dear Editor,

Re: Right sizing the printing industry: Print 21magazine article

I have just read your article on the private equity groups buying into the printing industry and found it very interesting.

I have owned a printing business for the past five years employing 15 people. Prior to that I was employed by Heidelberg selling capital equipment, and have long held the view, even prior to purchasing my own business, that the market in Brisbane (This is the only one I can really comment on), has too many players and mergers/acquisitions are the way to go.

With that in mind, my understanding is Penfold Buscombe's Queensland operation turns over around the $30,000,000 and still made a loss last year? (I believe this is correct, but may be wrong) Something that I am mindful of, is a huge turnover does not necessarily add up to huge profits (if any). There certainly needs to be more mergers, but the debt exposure has to be the main thing looked at when this is being undertaken.

I was very appreciative of your research and information provided.

Keep up the good work.
