Letters, feedback, opinions – get it off your chest
A response to last week's HP Indigo press sold
Dear Editor,
There are two ways to go to auction. Reserved and unreserved. If the
equipment must be sold and removed unreserved is the best way to go and let
the market decide what price it will pay. The Indigo Eprint 1000 (which was
clearly identified as pre-HP takeover in original article), was unreserved. The
two Heidelbergs had high reserves on them. In January, Grays auctioned a QM
DI-4 at just over $60K - fully working. This one needed $10,000 spending on it
for new LEDs but our instructions (we can advise but always act under our
customers' instructions), were to put a $70K reserve on it. It was passed in, as
was the 74 DI.
It's not clear what Phil's [Rennell] point is in his letter but it's worth noting that machinery
auctions are the fastest-growing method of plant and asset management
globally. Australia has some of the best used machinery dealers (and I include
Curries) in the world. They give fantastic service and technical extertise - and
many of them buy and sell with Grays auctions also. Our function is purely to
manage or dispose of the assets in accordance with our customers'
instructions and, that we hold 77% market share in doing this, must indicate
Grays is doing something right!
Auctions are the ultimate market barometer because the bidders determine the
end price. Often this is higher than expectations, sometimes lower. It's all a
matter of choice, just as the decision to buy new or used is the customer's
right. Grays auctions reconditioned, warrantied assets and also 'as is, where
is.' Inspection by the bidders is always an option. We're a marketplace, not the
stall-holder.
Judging by the results and emails and letters I receive from buyers and sellers,
the nett result is a positive and worthwhile service to the industry.
Kind regards,

Dear Editor,
We are a small printing firm and despite having to travel 64 kms to go to the Roadshow we found it well worthwhile. Congratulations on printing something about it to show that organisations such as the Printing Industries association is trying to do something to assist the industry – more than a lot of industry organisations are doing!
