Local and overseas printers battle over Galley Club Awards
A strong showing by local book printers halted the advance of international printers into the Australian market as supporters counted down the number of awards achieved by both sides at the sold-out Sydney event on 22 July.
Over 15 categories and 20 awards local printers Griffin Press, Ligare, OAP, Hannanprint and BPA faced off against global print giants Toppan, 1010 and Imago.
Local players won 12 to 8 with strong competition from overseas. Offset Alpine Printing led the local charge with wins across six categories as publishing production professionals celebrated the best books of the year.
The win is all the more laudable considering the high Australian dollar that gives overseas a good commercial advantage
Hachette Australia’s published ‘The Arrival and Sketch Book Suitcase’ won awards for overall book of the year and sheetfed limited edition book printed offshore by Imago.

The awards night also marked the end of president Michael Schulz’s tenure at the Galley Club. He will hand over the title at the next AGM in September so that he can focus more on his role as director at SOS Print & Media.
According to Schulz, five years in the role is long enough and it is important to get fresh faces running the club.
“I can’t dedicate as much time as I would like to, and it is time to get some young people to run the club. Last night was the biggest Galley Club event for a long time with 185 people attending from all these areas of publishing.
“It was good to see more local participation in these awards and to see that more quality items are produced locally,” he says.
