Major Mail Users roar back at ACCC

ACCC's approval of Australia Post's February 2008 draft price notification raises ire from Major Mail Users.

In its latest newsletter, the group vented its anger at this decision, which they believe is not in the best interests of consumers.

"It is our contention that the ACCC has erred in its judgement of Australia Post's proposals for a bulk pre-sort mail price increase," the newsletter said.

"The problem is ... if we cannot rely on the ACCC to look after consumer interests when dealing with Australia Post, to whom then do we turn next?"

Last month Graeme Samuel, chairman of the ACCC said that the group had taken a forward-looking approach to its assessment of Australia Post's pricing proposal.

"Based on this analysis, the ACCC's preliminary view is to not object to the price increases," he said.

Major Mail Users still maintain that such action will have a detrimental effect on the industry:

"We hold that any price increase in the bulk pre-sort mail product should be resisted by the ACCC until such time as our own advanced network integration proposals are dealt with properly by Australia Post at operational interface level."
