Measure for measure made easy with Australian Paper Tonne of Value

Australian Paper’s latest initiative, Tonne of Value, provides users with an audited statement of the economic, social and environmental values in each tonne of paper.

Tonne of Value gives a detailed breakdown of the energy and water usage, fibre sources and contribution to landfill, jobs and economic contribution in each tonne of paper manufactured by Australian Paper.

Australian Paper chief executive officer, Jim Henneberry, said the program was built on the understanding that sustainability indicators for the paper industry were intrinsically complicated, confusing and lacked global standards but were still critical for customers, staff and other stakeholders. "We are seeking to balance the many needs of multiple stakeholders. Providing independently reviewed metrics that track and report our key activities is a credible way to achieve that balance," Henneberry said.

Developing the program included extensive internal and external consultation, detailed independent third-party evaluation and assessment and acceptance of the actions Australian Paper must take, and the information it must communicate.

It has already been embraced by communications company, Computershare. David Hynes, global chairman at Computershare communication services believes it is important to adopt such sustainable practices. “We’re committed to and have rolled out sustainable communications and where paper is used, we look globally for the most environmentally sound and credible paper.  The whole Tonne of Value campaign extends that work, because it is measuring and reporting the paper’s full attributes, not just environmentally, but socially and economically,” he said.
