More 3DAP proofing success for CyraChrome

At its most recent standards meeting, the 3DAP committee approved no less than four new proofing systems from CyraChrome. 3DAP is Australia’s benchmark for digital proofing and workflow and is used by major publishers, printers and advertising agencies to ensure correct delivery of digital files and correct colour specifications in proofs. The four systems approved last week were:

  • CyraChrome Canon 7250 (A2) with ORIS ColorTuner 5.0 software and CGS semi-matte white proofing media
  • CyraChrome Canon 7200 (A1) with ORIS ColorTuner 5.0 software and CGS semi-matte white proofing media
  • CyraChrome Epson 7600 (A2) with ORIS ColorTuner 5.0 software and CGS satin white proofing media
  • CyraChrome Epson 9600 (A1+) with ORIS ColorTuner 5.0 software and CGS satin white proofing media.

These four are in addition to the four CyraChrome systems already approved by 3DAP.

Marketing Director Andy McCourt noted: “At the next approval meeting, we will submit proofs from the new Canon W2200 A3+ sheetfed proofer with ColorTuner 5.0. This will complete the trifecta of approved Canon-based ColorTuner proofers.

“The reason the new Canon machines make such good proofers is a combination of resolution, the fact they are dye-based, large ink capacity and sheer speed. They make contract proofs in about half the time of rival systems. Of course, we still offer Epson machines as proofers and we have an installed base of over 300 together with ColorTuner software.”

Upgrading the technology

Another major innovation from CyraChrome is the introduction of the Greatg-Macbeth ICColor 210 spectrophotometer. McCourt adds:

“Most of our ICC profiling to date has been accomplished using Gretag-Macbeth’s Spectrolino and ProfileMaker software. This is a superb instrument but fairly slow and very expensive. The new ICColour 210 in conjunction with ColorTuner 5.0 software makes its own profiles and, because it is a strip-scanning spectrophotometer, readings take one-quarter to one-third of the time. For around $8,000, every printer and publisher can own their own high-quality spectrophotometer and make their own profiles in house, keeping colour tightly under control.”

Up to speed on ColorTuner Version 5.0

In what has been a big week for CyraChrome, CGS Publishing Technologies of Germany has also sent out proofing expert Frank Kempf (pictured) to conduct a week’s intensive training on new ColorTuner version 5.0. McCourt added:

“ORIS ColorTuner version 5.0 from CGS is demonstrably the most advanced proofing software available to drive Epson, Canon and HP inkjet printers. The ACC (Automated Colour Calibration) feature allows multiple printers to be calibrated identically, instead of making an ICC profile for each one.

“This is done by what is called the iterative method of creating colour tables. Not only can it match multiple printers, but multiple processes too. If a customer is making proofs for sheetfed offset, web offset, newspapers, flexo and gravure using various proofing substrates, he need make only one Print Matching File, with the rest coming into calibration quickly by using a simple Reference Calibration. For true remote proofing, the distant proofers need only the inexpensive UCC (Use Colour Calibration) option to make use of the ‘host’ proofer’s profile.”

He continued; “This is the most significant revolution in contract proofing since ColorTuner 3.1 was introduced at PrintEX 1999. In addition, Spot, Special and Pantone® colours can be fine-tuned without affecting surrounding colours. Notoriously difficult Duotone proofing is now a breeze with ColorTuner 5.0. This is not just ‘colour management’ – a term that is bandied around willy-nilly in many quarters. It is the Total Management of Colour. ColorTuner users, both existing customers who upgrade and new version 5.0 clients, will have the most powerful colour tools ever release in their own hands.”

Since its earlier release in the USA in January, ColorTuner 5.0 with Canon proofers has sold over 200 copies into mission-critical high colour quality sites.

CGS Chairman Dieter Klein who visited Australia in February stated simple, “With ColorTuner version 5.0, CGS is once more number one in proofing. We are not a third-party Rip. We are first party!”
