National ColorTuner roll out for PMP Digital proofing

Australia’s most extensive national network of standardised proofing devices creates profiles to match an ever-increasing variety of paper.

Using CyraChrome’s ColorTuner Version 5 software running on Epson large format inkjet machines, John Craigie of PMP Digital Graphic Science is creating a national standard relevant to the company’s business needs. Already six of 17 sites around the country have been upgraded to the new hardware and software – three in Sydney, two in Melbourne, and another in Adelaide.

Working closely with PMP Print Tech Services on the use of press data from the various sites, PMP Digital Graphic Science has compiled over 20 profiles for different types of printing processes and stock. Because the printing sites are now gathering press data, utilising CTP and constructing Harmony curves to manage dot gain, the centralised Melbourne Graphic Science department is able to lock down national profiles across the different sites.

“This gives us the ability to offer a national standard repeatable across all sites, relevant to the stock and printing process. All profiles have been created from actual press data,” said Craigie. (pictured at right) Proofs are run utilising profiles that are matched to the stock that the job is being printed on. “This gives absolute relevance to the proof and is a great advantage to both PMP Print and PMP Digital clients.”

Among the first profiles were the Pacific Publication stocks, over ten of them, ranging from light 65 gsm text to 180 gsm cover papers. There are also a number of other web and sheetfed printing stock profiles.

From its laboratory in Melbourne the Graphic Science team is also responsible for quality control of the proofing and is able to access the remote sites in real time to make adjustments. The process is continually monitored on a daily and weekly basis with spectrophotometer readings. The end result is that PMP Digital is able to provide its clients with national dependable quality proofing across its large number of sites, through different processes and on a wide variety of paper. “We offer that as a service to our clients and I know they are recognising its benefits,” said Craigie.

He is full of praise for the CyraChrome system, describing it as the ideal proofing system for remote sites. A number of PMP Digital clients are also installing the ColorTuner proofers so their designers are in the colour loop from moment one.

“The new Version 5 of ColorTuner is a major step forward. It lifts digital proofing to another level and when combined with the Epson 9600 and 7600 machines, is proving to be a winner with many clients upgrading,” said Michael Laird, managing director of CyraChrome (pictured). “When a firm such as PMP Print endorses the system by installing it across its entire range of sites, you know it has passed the toughest test.”
