New joint venture digital printer in WA

A new venture expands horizons for WA-based grand format printer Discus Digital Print as co-owners open commercial digital with HP Indigo.

Carl Mendelle, co-owner of Discus says this venture has been a discussion point over the last couple of years. “Now that digital offset has become a growth market we think there is plenty of space for the new business.

“I believe there is more market than there are digital offset machines and people to fill it. We have a huge premade client list from Discus that we can approach with this new offering.”

Situated near West Perth close to the CBD, the new print venture, Discus On Demand, is a combination of two companies but a standalone business by itself, incorporating both business names and experiences.

“We have been getting lots of requests from our existing Discus client base on if and when we would service small format printing. It seemed to be the right time and opportunity to start this venture with our relationships with On Demand and Currie,” he says.

At this stage a HP Indigo 5000 is the sole print engine in the store. With the normal compliment of finishing equipment and a second machine on the books for the future, the duo are poised to make a name for themselves in this new market sector.

The biggest wide format digital printer in Melbourne, Bruce Peddlesden of On Demand, has mentored the Discus duo on the market they are venturing into, He advised on the equipment and generally how to go about selling HP Indigo, a product far different to what they are used to.

As a large Indigo user with experience in this area Peddlesden has been able to explain how the machine fits into the market.

“I’m sure that Discus On Demand will be as big a success as Discus has had grand format,” he says.
