NSW and Queensland award entries close Friday

Printing companies in NSW and Queensland have until Friday this week to get their entries in for the respective Printing Industries State print awards.

Both the Queensland PICA and WorkCover NSW Print Excellence Awards close their door to entries at 5pm Friday 25 September.

As a final guide for entrants, Chairman of judges for the WorkCover NSW Print Excellence Awards, Warwick Roden (pictured) says ink and water problems are a key control measure that printers should manage carefully.

“The lithographer‘s skill in the daily juggling act they perform, that of balancing ink and water, is on public display at the print awards, so you have to get it right,” he said.

“The judges keep a sharp eye open for a bit of catch-up, scum or tinting, filling in (or poor colour registration!) of fine reverse type, or water and roller marks appearing throughout the job.

“Poor control of ink and water also leads to uneven colour and registration through the job. The judges always look for consistency of colour in headings, printed index tabs, coloured borders or decorative rules that run from page to page,” Roden said.

He said these areas of consistency quickly indicate the level of care that has gone into the production of the item.

“Crisp, sharp printing impresses the judges – and your clients,” Roden said.

The South Australian/ Northern Territory PICA will be held on 23 October, WorkCover NSW Print Excellence Awards Friday 13 November the ACT PAGE Awards on Friday 20 November (entries close 6 November) and the Queensland PICA on Saturday 28 November.
