NZ print award show – not only for the big boys

The Pride in Print Awards are held as a reflection of the positive aspirations of the New Zealand printing industry, and the organisers are encouraging greater participation in the one and two-colour categories for the 2006 event. Pride and Print emphasizes the awards as representative of all areas of print, not just for those working at the four-and-more-colour end of the market.

Grant Letfus, judging convener for Pride in Print, insists there is a place for small printers at Pride in Print. “The opportunity is there for the smaller printer who produces high quality in one or two colours, to gain equal recognition that their work is worthy of the prestige that normally one thinks of being due to the high end of the market,” he says.

Letfus highlights the dedication and specialisation shown by the printers working in the field of one and two colour presses, resolute that the standard for judging remains the same across the categories.

“They are looking critically at the lay-down of colour, the consistency across the whole of the job and the finishing standards, things which will make a job stand out and make it worthy of a Pride In Print Award,” he says.

Sue Archibald, awards manager at Pride in Print, claims smaller printers have yet to fully recognise their potential place in the awards, with the one and two-colour categories traditionally receiving the lowest amount of entries.

“The point I want to get across is that a gold award is a gold award in any category,” says Archibald. “It carries for you the same worth, same recognition and same status. The prestige and the marketing benefits that flow from winning a top-of-the-range award are the same for your market niche as they would be for the country’s largest printer.”
