Original Screen drinks to breakthrough beer ad

Beer advertisement proves to be not such a hard case for New Zealand printing company, Original Screen.

The Waikato Draught advertisement, printed on a 20mm-deep corrugated zinc alume flute required both skills and technology, according to Original Screen director, Greg Nash. Thanks to the company's recent installation of an Inca Columbia Turbo flatbed UV printer, the job was made possible.

But with only limited experience in printing on corrugated iron, Nash recounts some difficulty when it came to ink adhesion. "Rather than laying down clear adhesion promoters to get the ink to key, we tested and then used our high-end ink, Sericol, from the United Kingdom and printed directly onto it," he said.

Cheers to that says Pride In Print judge Lance Bathard, pictured right.

The Publicis Mojo advertising agency has been well received. "The client thought it was fantastic," Nash said. "Generally on a product like that ... the printheads deliver a very high resolution at the top points but then tend to spray out a little bit in the valleys. But this job came out particularly well."

The Waikato Draught advert has been entered in the digital printing "other" category of this year's Pride In Print Awards. No strangers to winning, Nash hopes that the entry will continue Original Screen's reputation throughout New Zealand.

"We've won about 13 golds, 17 highly commendeds," he said. "All round, Pride In Print has had a great effect on the company."
