Pantone notches it up a level with new colour guides

The latest incarnation of the Pantone Matching System is the most substantial redesign the product has received in over 30 years, with the formula guide to be rolled out during 2005. Ease of use is one of the primary focuses of the new system, with the colour patches made 20% larger in the formula guides and 25% larger in the solid chip books.

Pantone president Richard Herbert claims that the changes were made to meet the needs of the customer. “For over four decades, Pantone Products have evolved to serve the ever-changing needs of the industry,” Herbert says. “Customers expressed a preference for larger swatches to improve the colour selection and specification process."

The new chips were produced using the firm's recently commissioned KBA Rapida 105. The stock and formulation will remain the same, but Pantone will continue to encourage users to regularly replace books to ensure ink and paper stock colours haven't changed.

Two-book sets will be available covering coated and uncoated stocks, as well as a three-book that include coated, uncoated and matt stocks.
