Paper report clears the air on carbon emissions

New report on carbon emissions gives print community more information on paper’s environmental weight.

Christopher Sewell CEO of The Gaia Partnership recently commissioned the RMIT Centre of Design to source published academic studies on carbon emissions in paper manufacture and related processes.

According to Sewell, (pictured), the goal of the study was to identify key findings through a literature review of life cycle assessment studies related to paper manufacturing and carbon impacts.

“I have developed a methodology that measures carbon impacts of any form of marketing and printing is the big one everyone talks about – what’s the environmental impacts of printing. I commissioned RMIT to do the research for me.”

The report talks about issues such as the best forms of paper to use in marketing campaigns, however Sewell stressed that he deliberately set out not to draw any conclusions on what mediums were better or worse for the environment.

“I just want people to look at the facts and figures that are out there. I’m basing my calculations on what the facts are as an independent person,” he said. “It’s an information piece rather than a conclusion piece.”
