Paper turns a new page at Sydney festival

A new festival dedicated to showcasing paper’s creative uses is coming to Sydney next month, drawing the support of KW Doggett and Theo Pettaras at digitalpress.

According to Lisa Loxley, (pictured) curator, the A4 Paper Festival which runs from 31 May to 5 June at various locations throughout the city, is a reminder that “all you really need is a simple piece of paper and a little creativity.”

Presented by The Paper Convention, a collective dedicated to the documentation of paper expressionism, the festival will showcase a number of paper-based creations from large-scale installations, self-published zines and three-dimensional graphic sculptures.

Loxley is particularly excited about having Professor Yoshinobu Miyamoto, who is travelling from Japan, at the show where he will lead a six-foot paper installation along with public talks and workshops.

KW Doggett has now been confirmed as a sponsor for the festival. According to national marketing and promotions manager, Nevi Laketa, the event will be important not just to connect with a wide range of paper users, but also to showcase some of its Arjo Fine Paper products, which it is the exclusive Australian distributor for.

“We see this as our link to the creative side of the industry: paper is not all about print, there’s other means as well and we like to align ourselves with this side of the industry,” she said.

Fellow sponsor, digitalpress, also came on board as a sponsor. According to Theo Pettaras, who is speaking at the event, it was an opportunity to continue the resurgence of paper.

"As soon as I found out about the festival, I wanted to get on board straight away," he said. "We haven't seen anything like this in Sydney before; it's a great opportunity to show what print and paper are capable of."
