Peacock Bros labels smells like roses to Grandiflora

Flower grower and wholesales, Grandiflora, looks to tailor-made label solution from Peacock Bros to streamline its production.

The Australian-owned and operated company produces between 3000 and 7000 bunches of flowers per day for distribution to markets, wholesalers and florists.

For years, the company had been looking at advancing its production process, but it wasn’t until Grandiflora manager, Phil Elliot, spoke to Peacock Bros that it became a reality.

“It always seemed too difficult, but deciding what we wanted Peacock Bros were able to come up with a solution,” he said.

A blooming success: the new label system in action.

According to Andrew Crump, area manager for Peacock Bros, it made sense to replace manual production with an automated system.

The labelling system was designed to integrate the label printer through the touch screen directly into Grandiflora’s systems. This integration allows the program to communicate directly with the printer, feeding it information and content such as flower variety, colour, length, bloom size and batch number.

There is a touch-screen system linked to Zebra TLP2844-Z desktop label printer to generate labels on demand for the flower bouquets. Using the interface, the packers can look up the flower details on a touch screen computer and the information relating to the bouquet and barcode is then printed onto a custom-printed label. From here, the packer then applies the label to the flower bouquet and places them on special racking ready for delivery.

Crump said that it took 10 weeks to develop the system, which was implemented at the end of last year. Elliot is pleased with the result, which he believes places the company above other flower growers in Australia.

“It has identified our brand. Our labelling system means that every bunch is labelled with head size, length and variety so that consumers know exactly what they are getting,” said Elliot.

“We can also trace batches which allows us to follow the roses throughout the whole process.”
