Staff at Melbourne commercial printer Pinnacle Print Group used to 'shudder' when they had to do uncoated colour prints on dry toner machines - but with their new HP Indigo 7600 digital press from Currie Group, those worries are a thing of the past.

The new 7600 is Pinnacle's second HP Indigo press in the space of a year, joining the 3550 purchased in 2016 and replacing the printer's old dry toner digital press. "Initially the first Indigo upped the quality enormously. What we could do in dry toner was limited," said Pedro Carlus, operations manager. "We used to send out jobs whose quality we weren’t quite comfortable with, because we couldn’t get what we wanted from dry toner.

"There’s been a big difference in quality, especially with uncoated work – we used to shudder when we had to do uncoated jobs on dry toner machines," he said.

With the two HP Indigo presses working side by side, printing speeds have gone up considerably, says Carlus. "We can swing jobs over very quickly now with the Indigo there – we’re doing a lot of covers now on Indigo and the text on offset. They’re very quick with black and white work as well," he said.

Accompanying these new presses are a new Horizon BQ-270 perfect binder, plus an AFC-566 folder, both also supplied by Currie Group. Carlus says the new binding equipment makes Pinnacle far more responsive when proofing perfect bound books. "It’s saving a lot of time driving out to finishing houses for jobs. We can show clients right away what the problem is with their jobs, and it’s kept a lot of our work in-house which gives us a quicker turnaround time. It gives us more confidence in tackling quick-turnaround work," he said.

Carlus says he's very happy with Currie Group's service, adding that the supplier is prepared to work with its customers. "They’ve always been more than willing to help out where they can. The equipment’s one thing but the company that backs it up is another, and I think Currie Group is as good as the two brands they’ve put in here. They back them up very well. We’re extremely happy with the machines and with Currie Group’s service," he said.
