Platypus Graphics grows with Bobst die cutter

Major investments ahead for Queensland company, Platypus Graphics, as it installs new Bobst Expert Cut and prepares for KBA Rapida 106 press. Mitchell Jordan made the trip to Brisbane to find out more.

The family-owned business, which triumphed at this year’s National Print Awards, is set to expand its packaging arm with the installation of a new Bobst Expert Cut die cutter, which was completed last week, and a KBA press due to be installed by the end of June.

According to Aaron Lusch, (pictured) sales director at Platypus Graphics, the die cutter was chosen in order to fulfil the company’s capacity for the packaging market. “It’s a resilient machine and means that we have a back-up,” he said. Platypus Graphics purchased its first Bobst die cutter in 2006.

The Rapida will complement the die cutter, added Lusch. “We bought this press largely to facilitate the packaging side of the business and to increase our capacity there,” he said.

Platypus Graphics moved into packaging ten years ago and has since been on a path to grow that arm of the business. Purchasing both the Bobst and Rapida were the next step in developing the company’s packaging facilities. “Over the last 10 years we’ve been working hard at building our credibility in that market,” Lusch said. “We can now supply large-run packaging work to our customers.”
