Brisbane print and packaging business Platypus Graphics has won the coveted Judges Choice award and four other categories at this year’s PICA QLD event.
Platypus won the Judges Choice award for its entry JUSTUS magazine and also picked up four gold awards, in Packaging (for XXXX Gift Boxes), Embellishments (JUSTUS), Flexible Substrate (‘Electric’ Window Graphic), and Booklets, Catalogues, Brochures & Magazines (Pinnacle).
Brisbane consultants DAIS Brand Strategy won three awards, for Topography, Illustration and Corporate Identity. Other winners included Colour Chiefs, TAFE Brisbane, Spot Productions, Heaneys Performers in Print, CPX Printing & Logistics, Little Peach Co., Brisbane Festival Guide, Multi-Color Qld, Label Print Systems, Colorcorp, Nick Pty, Cornerstone Press, Greenridge Press, Tennyson Group and BB Print.
Matt Chadwick from Express Print & Mail on the Sunshine Coast won the Progressive Award that recognises 'future leaders' in the print, packaging and communications sector.
“This year's awards were spread over a much wider group of companies and the judges deliberated for some time before choosing the winner of the major award,” said Mel Ireland, Printing Industries Queensland member services manager. “This year’s winning piece is a testament to how good communication, from concept to design to print and to finish, can showcase so many skills required to create an inspiring and impactful printed piece.”
The 22nd annual awards ceremony in Brisbane attracted a crowd of 365, the largest in six years, according to Ireland.
“With some of the category changes from last year’s awards now taking effect, the judges faced new challenges with judging some of the categories this year. The new free category had quite a diverse range of entries,” she said. “The trips out to do site visits for the wide format entry was a new addition to the judging process also. Not to mention some of the other wide format entries that came in were not just as a small sample but 5 or 10 metre lengths.”
BB Print from Mackay won the 2015 Environmental Management award, sponsored by Media Super.
“The Printing Industries Association of Australia and its members companies remain committed to the development of an environmentally sustainable industry,” said Ireland. “Equally important to this, is the communication of this sustainability to the wider public. There are so many myths and misconceptions out there about our industry. It is up to all of us to let our colleagues, clients and associates now that ‘printing isn’t bad for the environment’, ‘paper isn’t destroying forests’ and ‘electronic communication isn’t more environmentally friendly than print & paper’.
