PMP plans to pick up APN Goss press

Planned addition of Goss M600 press plus bindery and finishing equipment from APN’s set to close print site powers up PMP’s New Zealand print operations.

Last month, APN announced the closure of its Manukau heatset printing business stating that “gloss printing operations are no longer core to the company’s strategy and have been treated as a discontinued business for accounting purposes” which will result in the loss of over 100 jobs.

As a result, APN’s gloss printing requirements will be outsourced to PMP under a long-term 10-year contract in New Zealand. PMP CEO, Richard Allely (pictured) believes this is good news for the company. “It runs on the back of PMP losing ACP in New Zealand,” he told Print21. “APN also brings third-party work with other clients which will move across to PMP NZ. We have replaced and improved most of the volumes in the business that we lost with ACP, which is a great outcome for our business.”

PMP has already got its eye fixed on APN’s Goss M600 press along with bindery and finishing equipment. According to Allely, most of the equipment at the APN site will be sold of to the second-hand market overseas.

Allely believes the Goss press will offer a number of advantages. “It enables us to reconfigure our business to support APN’s work and third-party work,” he said. “We end up with a print site that is purpose-built to support those clients.”

Approval from the NZ Commerce Commission has yet to be granted for the sale of the equipment. Allely, however, does not see this as a major concern. “Our understanding is that there is no reason why it would be withheld,” he added.

Allely also revealed that five to six staff from the APN site may obtain work at PMP NZ. “In total w are looking at taking five to six staff,” he said. “The bulk of people on that site will unfortunately lose their jobs.”
