Print innovation lights up gold
Digitalpress’ novel approach to invitations using UV light scored the top innovation prize at the NSW PICAs.
According Theo Pettaras, owner and digital innovator, print innovation awards give companies the confidence to collaborate with clients to utilise new technologies and not be scared with experimentation.
“I would like to see innovation as a very important part of print. It helps people create more print and that’s really what we want to do. I don’t believe wining awards pays the bills, but its nice for outstanding work to be recognised in its own right,” he says.
When Castrol’s premium oil product EDGE professional is exposed to UV light it lights up as part of its product security. Thinking outside the box in collaboration with client Randem Media, Digitalpress designed a unique print
piece using UV inks and a UV key-ring flashlight.
“Put the two together and hidden text is illuminated, creating interest and allowing the recipient to interact with the print,” says Pettaras.
The gold PICA award follows the company’s Prinnovation win in September, held as part of the PrintCom exhibition in Melbourne. Digitalpress’ current dilemma is where to put its new certificate and medallion, as there is no more room along its walls.
