Market survey and FESPA report highlights wide format innovations and utilisation in packaging sector as well as signage industry.

This year’s FESPA exhibition in Cologne was the largest ever and showcased the latest technology in wide format technology. Nessan Cleary was there for Print21 with a comprehensive survey of the latest developments.  He met up with some Australians who travelled to the largest show of its kind in the world.

Lindsay Barnes, general manager, Fujifilm Australia Graphic Systems, confirmed that with the high rate of growth in the sector, many commercial printers are now getting into wide format. He was promoting Fujifilm’s latest machine, the entry-level Onset R40LT.

“The Onset light is at a reduced capital cost to get into grand format and with the ability to upgrade to the high-speed version by just adding some component,” he said.

Ben Eaton, general manager of Starleaton, also made the trip to Germany, straight after PrintEx. “Big and buzzing,” was how he described the show. He was there scouting new substrates to add to Starleaton’s formidable range, becoming enthusiastic about Neschen, the German-based coated self-adhesive and digital print media producer.

Also in the latest issue, Andy McCourt, editor Print21, focuses on inkjet, especially the technology’s ability to produce packaging. He foresees a greater role than ever for wide format in the sector.

Rounding off the wide format survey, Laurel Brunner, Digital Dots, weighs the case of LED versus mercury arc lamps for substrate curing.
