Quality Press perfects the trims with a Wohlenberg

Local distributor CPI is hailing Wohlenberg's new binder as a revolution in magazine and book finishing, with its ability to produce gate-fold covered books identified as the machine's speciality. Gate-fold covers are creased, folded and bound flush with the foredge-trimmed text, with all the functions produced in a single pass using PUR gluing technology.

CPI finishing manager Rayne Simpson was joined by Wohlenberg managing director Hans-Dieter Ehlermann as well as Cecil Wheller from Henkel Adhesives. The Champion “e” Perfect Binder was fired up to demonstrate to onlookers its ability to trim a gatefold right to the edge, and to cut a four-hour job down to something as swift as 45 minutes.

George Laterla from Marvel Bookbinding in Melbourne was on hand to preview the technology, interested in possibly upgrading his facilities at some point in the near future. Laterla was impressed with the capabilities of the machine. “It offers incredible speed improvements, as well as better quality finishing. The cuttings are square and tight, which makes it look great.”

Many in the print industry will be interested in the machine's potential to help claw back overseas book production, but the bookbinding jury is still out at this stage according to Laterla. “It is possible the technology might have such an effect, but maybe is all I can say at this point in time.”
